Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 1 (ANI): BJP leader and advocate Karunasagar said that the Telangana MLA T Raja Singh’s acquittal in the 2022 case linked to alleged remarks hurting religious sentiments may have a “persuasive value” in Nupur Sharma’s case; however, the judgment is not binding on other courts.
Speaking to ANI, Karunasagar, who represented T Raja Singh in the court, maintained that relief for Nupur Sharma depends on a proper investigation into the case.
He said, “Yesterday’s acquittal of MLA Raja Singh naturally leads many people to ask whether it has any bearing on the pending case against Nupur Sharma. The legal position is this: Nupur Sharma is also facing similar allegations for referring to material which she maintains is found in Islamic literature. This judgment is not binding on other courts, but it certainly has persuasive value regarding the importance of a fair and proper investigation. Whether the same reasoning ultimately benefits Nupur Sharma depends on it.”
This comes after the Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Hyderabad on Tuesday acquitted Telangana MLA T Raja Singh in a 2022 case registered under various sections of the IPC related to alleged remarks on religious sentiments.
The case was registered under Sections 153A(a)(b), 295A, 504, 505(2) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Karunasagar said that the court found no grounds to proceed after examining witnesses and evidence in the matter in a 2022 case registered by Mangalhat Police Station.
“Today, the Special MP/MLA Court has acquitted MLA Raja Singh from the 2022 case, which was registered by PS Mangalat for allegedly commenting on the life of Prophet Muhammad. The complainant in the case has himself admitted that the alleged verses had reference to the Islamic literature… The court, after going through all the witnesses and evidence on hand, has approved that the case has not been made out against MLA Raja Singh and has acquitted him,” the advocate said.
In 2022, multiple FIRs were filed against Nupur Sharma, then a BJP spokesperson, for her remarks about the Prophet Mohammed during a television show. (ANI)
