Patiala (Punjab) [India], August 13 (ANI): Punjab Police registered an FIR on Thursday after a married couple was allegedly attacked by a pet Pitbull in the Ghuman Nagar area of Patiala, leaving both injured.
The couple had visited a property on Tuesday to inspect it for rent when the dog attacked them after they opened the gate latch.
Sharing details about the incident, the husband, Ankit Sabharwal, stated that he had visited the property with his wife to inspect it for rent. As soon as they arrived and opened the gate latch, the dog attacked them, leaving both him and his wife injured.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagjit Singh Randhawa said the FIR was registered against an unknown person as the victims did not know the name of the dog’s owner. However, the complaint mentions the house number of the residence in Ghuman Nagar where the dog is suspected to be kept.
“We’ve registered the FIR. They don’t know the owner’s name, so they just registered it against unknown, but they’ve written that whosoever’s home it is verified,” DSP Randhawa said.
The DSP stated that police are investigating to establish the ownership of the dog and the complaint will subsequently be registered in the owner’s name.
“We are currently investigating whose dog it is; then we’ll register the complaint under their name,” Randhawa said.
He added that the FIR was filed late at night and police personnel were engaged in Independence Day-related duties.
According to CCTV footage of the incident, nearby residents attempted to fend off the Pitbull with sticks as it attacked the couple. A woman was also seen coming out of the house with a stick but was unable to stop the animal. Two to three more people later arrived with sticks and managed to pull the injured couple to safety.
Meanwhile, Municipal Corporation Patiala Commissioner Pooja Syal Grewal termed the incident “very scary and regrettable” and said keeping ferocious dogs as pets is strictly prohibited.
She said the victim was lodging a complaint with the police and appropriate action would be taken against the dog’s owner.
“Our health wing is already handling the registration process regularly, but following this incident, we intend to be even more vigilant,” Grewal said.
Further investigation into the incident is underway. (ANI)
