Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 9 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Thursday met the Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and urged the Election Commission to grant a 10-day extension for enumeration under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.

The UBT Sena leader asked the Maharashtra CEO to address logistical challenges in the enumeration under the SIR exercise, citing heavy rainfall and large-scale redevelopment.

Thackeray said his party has consistently raised concerns over the SIR process and alleged instances of duplicate names in electoral rolls over the past year.

He said during the meeting, the party delegation submitted three key demands aimed at making the enumeration process more practical and accessible for both residents and officials.

He also flagged that due to redevelopment projects in Mumbai and other cities of Maharashtra, several residents were staying in transit camps or rented accommodations.

Explaining that the party has sought an extension of the ongoing enumeration exercise due to persistent rainfall and the difficulties faced by enumerators and residents, Thackeray said, “Over the past year, we have frequently raised concerns regarding SIR and instances of duplicate names. Today, we presented three specific demands. First, considering the rainfall over the last ten days alongside the ongoing enumeration process, we have requested a ten-day extension. Under such weather conditions, enumeration is simply not feasible, nor is it possible for civic staff, government employees, or teachers to travel. Secondly, large-scale redevelopment is underway in Mumbai and other cities, with many residents currently living in transit camps or rented accommodation elsewhere.”

Thackeray argued that setting up dedicated enumeration booths at redevelopment sites would ensure that displaced residents are not left out of the electoral roll revision process.

He also suggested that housing societies could serve as efficient centres for enumeration by coordinating with their managing committees.

“We have proposed setting up enumeration booths at the redevelopment sites themselves to make the process easier for both the residents and the staff. Thirdly, given the prevalence of housing societies in Mumbai and other cities. Enumeration could be completed in a single day by coordinating with the society’s president and secretary,” Aaditya Thackeray told reporters.

As per the ECI, the enumeration will be completed by July 24. The draft roll will be published on August 5, with claims and objections open from August 5 to September 4.

The final roll will be published on October 7. (ANI)
