Chandigarh [India], July 31 (ANI): The Haryana State Commission for Women (HSCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of an alleged case of repeated sexual assault involving a 12-year-old girl in Panipat and directed the district police to initiate immediate legal action in the matter.
In a communication issued on Friday to the Superintendent of Police, Panipat, and the Station House Officer of Camp Police Station, the Commission said it had received information regarding allegations that the minor girl was repeatedly sexually assaulted over an extended period. The alleged accused in the case include the child’s stepmother and brother.
Terming the matter as “extremely grave and sensitive”, the Commission directed the police to ensure a fair, impartial, prompt and sensitive investigation in accordance with the provisions of law and initiate appropriate legal proceedings against all persons found involved.
The Commission also recommended immediate measures to ensure the safety, security and protection of both the complainant and the minor victim. It directed that they should not face any threats, intimidation, coercion, harassment or undue influence during the course of the investigation.
The HSCW further instructed the Superintendent of Police, Panipat, to personally monitor the investigation or have it supervised by a senior police officer to ensure there are no lapses or unnecessary delays.
Emphasising the legal protection available to child victims, the Commission directed that the identity of the minor, including her name, photograph, address, school details or any information that could reveal her identity, must not be disclosed at any stage, in accordance with the law.
The Commission has also sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Panipat police at the earliest, stating that the matter involves the rights, dignity and protection of a minor child and should be accorded top priority.
A copy of the Commission’s recommendation has also been forwarded to the Director General of Police, Haryana, for information and necessary action. (ANI)
