Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 2 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday criticised Opposition MPs over their skit on the Ram Mandir donations.
He said that they targeted Hinduism and would not have the courage to stage similar performances involving other religions.
Speaking to ANI, Majumdar said, “The theatrics displayed by Pappu Yadav, Rahul Gandhi, and their associates regarding Hinduism, and specifically the saffron colour associated with the faith, in front of the Lok Sabha and the Makar Dwar are completely condemnable and in poor taste. You only dare to do this with Hinduism. You would not have the courage to do the same with any other religion; otherwise, you would face severe consequences.”
His remark came after Opposition MPs staged a skit inside the Parliament complex on July 31, using symbolic roles to raise allegations related to donations collected for the Ram Mandir.
During the performance, Pappu Yadav wore saffron robes and played the role of a temple priest, while other Opposition MPs enacted a scene involving a donation box and allegations of corruption.
The skit drew strong criticism from BJP leaders, with party leaders including Bansuri Swaraj and several MLAs filing police complaints in New Delhi, alleging that the performance hurt religious sentiments.
Further, he said the West Bengal government is committed to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), adding that the Bill has been referred to a committee for further discussion.
“The West Bengal government has introduced a UCC Bill, which has now been referred to a committee for further discussion. Implementing the UCC is indeed our government’s intention. The Union Home Minister himself announced in our West Bengal election manifesto that we would implement the UCC. Therefore, our government, under the leadership of the Honourable Chief Minister, is committed to implementing the UCC…The UCC is being implemented in states where the BJP is in power. The situation in other states will be considered in the future,” Majumdar said.
He further added, “Bangladesh is our neighbouring country, and the better our relations with them, the more beneficial it will be for both nations.” (ANI)
