New Delhi [India], October 12 (ANI): Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary MA Baby on Monday condemned the handling of protests in Delhi, describing the situation as “barbarity” and calling for a broad platform involving students, youth, women, workers, farmers, civil society members and intellectuals to continue the agitation.
Baby said various organisations and individuals from different sections of society should come together to sustain the movement across the country.
“These days it was barbarity in Delhi. People will continue to struggle. Every organisation of various sections of people, civil society, intellectual and cultural personalities, we want a broad platform of struggle that is emerging in our country,” he said.
The CPI(M) general secretary said he had decided to take up the issue seriously by mobilising people and supporting different sections of society. He added that the party would pursue legal action alongside protests on the streets and in educational institutions and universities.
“I have decided to take it up very seriously by mobilising people and supporting every section of students, youth, women, workers, peasants, civil society, and public intellectuals. Along with this struggle in the streets, in educational institutions, and in universities, we also wanted to undertake legal action,” Baby said.
He said the CPI(M) was the first political party to approach the Supreme Court over the situation in Delhi, alleging that the national capital had been turned into a “war zone”.
Baby also welcomed the Supreme Court’s observations on restrictions imposed in the city, saying the executive should not shut down the entire capital because of dissent and protests.
He said, “CPI(M) was the first political party to go to the Supreme Court, bringing to the attention of the Supreme Court that Delhi has been transformed into a war zone. We appreciate the Supreme Court for having pointed out that because of some dissent and protest, the executive should not close down the entire city of Delhi. They also stated that the internet should be restored and that only reasonable restrictions can be imposed.” (ANI)
