Guwahati (Assam) [India], October 25 (ANI): Several political parties, including Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and other organisations have decided to hold a mass movement across the state seeking justice for Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore in September last year.
On Sunday, a public meeting was held at Zubeen Garg Khetra at Sonapur in Kamrup (Metro) district in the presence of the representatives of Congress, AJP, Raijor Dal and other non-political organisations. It was attended by the followers and family members of the late singer.

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi told ANI that the movement will be led by Garima Saikia Garg, wife of Zubeen Garg. He alleged that the Assam government had failed to deliver justice in the singer’s case, prompting them to launch a statewide mass movement to seek justice.
“The biggest cultural loss of this time is our absolute favourite, Zubeen Garg ji, who passed away in Singapore. It’s been over a year today, but all of Assam still hasn’t received justice. The ministers are just playing politics. We won’t accept this. That’s why we all got together today and decided that from now on, we’ll start protesting and head to court under the leadership of Garima Saikia Garg. We will come together and fight in court, and we will bring all the people of Assam together.”
He further asserted that the movement would focus solely on seeking justice for the late singer, with no political party affiliation or political branding.
“We’ll organise as big a mass movement and protest as possible, as quickly as we can, so that the government is forced to give our cultural icon justice. They will have to give us justice. So today, we’ve made the firm decision that no political party or political nameplate will ever be involved in this movement. Zubeen da’s wife, along with everyone who joins, will have to leave their party affiliations behind and join as Zubeen da’s supporters,” added Gagoi.

Nekibur Zaman, Gauhati High Court Advocate, also attended the meeting today and reflected on the ongoing court proceedings in the Zubeen Garg’s death case.
“The two accused persons have been granted bail by the Gauhati High Court. The Hon’ble High Court, after examining the records, stated that there was no material to keep them in detention, as they had already completed more than one year. The court has decided to grant bail. If we are not satisfied, we can approach the superior court, that is, the Hon’ble Supreme Court, seeking rejection of the bail. Some people, I think, have already approached the Supreme Court, and the government has also declared that it will oppose the bail. The government has already decided to file an objection petition before the Hon’ble Guwahati High Court,” said Zaman while talking to ANI.

In October, the Gauhati High Court granted bail to suspended Assam Police DSP Sandipon Garg, who was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the Zubeen Garg death case.
A single bench of Justice Rajesh Mazumdar granted bail to Sandipon, a cousin of late singer Zubeen, after hearing his petition.
Meanwhile, on October 9, the Gauhati High Court also granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta, a co-singer of the late singer Zubeen Garg, in connection with the investigation into his death, making her the first alleged accused in the case to secure bail from the court.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar, the Gauhati High Court granted bail to Mahanta on a bond of Rs 50,000. She was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police in 2025 following hours of questioning in connection with Garg’s death.
Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, in a scuba diving accident, a day before he was supposed to perform at the Northeast India Festival. (ANI)
