New Delhi [India], October 6 (ANI): Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president Saurabh Bhardwaj and other party leaders will join the Congress, Left parties and other Delhi-based parties in a protest over alleged “vote theft” outside the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office on October 7.
In a statement, Bhardwaj said the AAP would participate in the protest and called upon party workers, supporters and members to join in large numbers.
“On Wednesday, we will hold a protest outside the Delhi CEO’s office against ‘vote theft.’ We have called upon AAP workers, supporters, and members of the party to participate in large numbers,” he said.
“The AAP had already announced that on the issue of ‘Vote Chori’ it would join all protests held on the streets,” Bhardwaj said.
His remarks came after INDIA bloc leaders marched towards the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi earlier in the day.
The Opposition MPs were stopped by barricades from entering Nirvachan Sadan, following which several leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, staged a sit-in at the nearby Akashvani Bhavan, around 100 metres from the poll panel’s office.
Following the protest, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other leaders were detained by Delhi Police from Akashvani Bhavan, where they staged a dharna against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Congress MPs Pawan Khera, KC Venugopal and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring were among those detained by Delhi Police. New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma was present at Akashvani Bhavan.
Delhi Police also detained several Youth Congress and NSUI leaders, including IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib, outside Akashvani Bhavan.
The protest is part of the broader “Save Democracy” campaign announced by the Opposition, under which its leaders have been holding demonstrations and public programmes against the Election Commission of India amid a row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. (ANI)
