Amritsar (Punjab) [India], October 5 (ANI): Following the shooting incident of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sukhchian Singh, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha on Monday said ASI Singh was shot at while returning to his village after completing his duty, adding that his injury was serious but not life-threatening.

Speaking about the incident, Sinha said the ASI, who is a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer, was allegedly followed by two youths on a motorcycle before a shot was fired at him.

“The investigation is currently underway. The factual position established so far is that our ASI was returning after completing his duty. He is a GRP officer. While he was returning, he came under fire. Two youths on a motorcycle had been following him; naturally, he was unaware that he was being followed,” Sinha said.

He said the incident took place around 300-400 metres from the ASI’s village.

“A shot was fired at him right here at this spot. I have come to inspect the scene myself. The bullet passed through the muscles of his arm. It is a serious injury, though not life-threatening. He is safe, and I will be going to visit him shortly,” Sinha said.

The senior police officer said all possible angles were being investigated and specialised teams had been deployed to establish the facts.

“We are examining every aspect of the investigation in great depth. Just as we have successfully solved all previous cases, we will solve this one too. Specialised teams from both the district and our specialised units have been deployed, and the investigation is proceeding in full swing,” he said.

Sinha said police were hopeful of uncovering the circumstances behind the firing soon.

“We will soon uncover the facts behind this incident and reveal them to you,” he added.

ASI Singh was shot at by unidentified assailants on Ajnala Road on Sunday while returning home to Jagdevpur after duty in Amritsar.

The attack occurred after he crossed the Jagdev Khurd bridge, where three unidentified men riding a motorcycle allegedly opened fire at him.

According to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar Rural Kanwalpret Singh, the incident took place around 7:00 to 7:30 PM on Sunday evening, leaving Sukhchain Singh injured after a bullet struck his arm. He was immediately taken to a civil hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Currently, an FIR has been registered at Ajnala Police Station under FIR No. 334. (ANI)
