New Delhi [India], September 30 (ANI): Punjab Congress working president Raj Kumar Verka on Tuesday slammed the AAP government over the law and order situation and said “gangsterism is at its peak today” in the state.
He said the government should identify people behind violence in LPU campus.
“The administration must take responsibility for that, and I observe that if students are suffering, being pushed into conflict, and attempts are being made to label them as terrorists—then which agencies are behind this? Who are the people involved?” he asked in response to a query on students holding a protest at Lovely Professional University (LPU).
“If police vehicles are being torched and the university facilities are being set ablaze, who is responsible for this state of affairs, and whose responsibility is it to fix it?…Gangsterism is at its peak today; these gangsters are running their operations from within the jails—making extortion calls—while the law and order situation in Punjab is in a terrible state,” he added.
Student protests erupted in Phagwara early Sunday following the circulation of reports on social media about the alleged rape of a university student inside the campus premises. The protests later turned violent, prompting the deployment of a large police force.
Police have said an investigation is underway into the reports that triggered the protests. An FIR has been registered against multiple unknown persons.
LPU has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice. The university advised students who wished to travel home to do so in consultation with their parents or guardians.
The university also appealed to students to remain calm, follow official instructions and avoid unnecessary movement or involvement in unrest-related activities. (ANI)
