Patna (Bihar) [India], September 21 (ANI): Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, on Monday launched a scathing attack on the state government over a viral video from Jamui showing a young man being assaulted and a girl being molested, alleging that “gunda-raj” (rule of criminals) has completely taken hold across Bihar.
Expressing deep anguish over the incident, Yadav stated that women and young girls in the state no longer feel safe anywhere, accusing the state administration of trying to cover up such crimes rather than delivering justice.
“This is a truly tragic incident. We are deeply ashamed. The government, however, seems to have lost all sense of shame or decency regarding such events. It raises serious doubts about the safety of girls in Bihar today,” Yadav told reporters in Patna here.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader further highlighted the worsening condition of women’s safety across educational institutions and public places.
“Whether it is day or night; whether at college, school, on the street, in a hostel, or even inside or outside their homes—the rise in atrocities against women in Bihar is undeniable. Ask any girl in Bihar today; none of them feels safe—that is the reality,” he said.
Accusing the police and state authorities of shielding their failures, Yadav added, “The saddest part is that instead of taking action, the government and the police work to suppress and cover up these matters. Instead of securing justice for victims, they focus on hushing up the cases. It is utterly shameful. A state of lawlessness—gunda-raj—has completely taken hold in Bihar.”
The incident in Jamui sparked widespread outrage after a video surfaced online showing anti-social elements thrashing a youth and molesting a girl. Following the public outcry, Jamui police registered an FIR and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), detaining three minors so far, while active search operations continue to nab the prime accused.
Earlier, Police in Bihar’s Jamui district launched a crackdown following the widespread circulation of a viral video showing a young boy being physically assaulted and a girl being groped by a group of miscreants.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishwajeet Dayal confirmed that three minors have been taken into custody so far after being identified from the video footage, while continuous raids are being conducted to apprehend the remaining suspects.
“An FIR has been registered regarding the incident of molestation and indecent behaviour by anti-social elements shown in the video, and a SIT has been constituted under the leadership of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Jamui; the team is conducting continuous raids. Based on identifications made from the video, three individuals have been taken into custody. Two others have been identified, and efforts are underway to arrest them as well… As for the main accused—the one who appears to have behaved indecently with the woman—he has been identified, and we are making efforts to arrest him soon; we are actively working on this… We will take action against those attempting to tarnish the reputation of Jamui district… We have arrested three minors so far; as the investigation proceeds and more individuals are taken into custody,” said the Jamui SP.
Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also condemned the video, saying it was deeply disturbing. (ANI)
