New Delhi [India], August 6 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta applauded India’s impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where the nation secured 39 medals. She also praised the country’s performance at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026, held in the national capital and concluded earlier this month.
At the CWG 2026, India secured fourth place with a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Among India’s medal tally, Indian para athletes also achieved a remarkable feat by winning 3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Their historic performance marked India’s finest-ever para athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games and ended a 20-year wait for Indian para athletics to reach the CWG podium.
Indian players also delivered a spectacular performance at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships. Asserting dominance across most events, India secured numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals.
On Thursday, the Delhi CM, during the inauguration of the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation’s (SDF) first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Lab at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Pitampura, praised India’s strong performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
She said the country’s success reflected the immense potential of its youth and stressed that with the right opportunities, facilities and platform, young Indians are capable of achieving excellence at the highest level.
“Recently in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as well, you saw the major achievements India made, how many gold and other medals we won and brought back. So, I can believe that our country India, which is a nation of youth–if the children here get the opportunity, the facilities, and the platform–they have the strength to reach the highest levels; they have that caliber and that capability,” Rekha Gupta said.
Rekha Gupta hailed the organisations of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in Delhi, highlighting that India won around 80 per cent of the medals on offer and praising the country’s dominant performance at the event.
“Recently, a very big… not just in the country, but in Delhi, a very big Commonwealth Games Table Tennis Championship was organised by you; I congratulate you for that as well. And in that Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship which was hosted in Delhi itself and organised by the Delhi government, I am happy to share that 80 per cent of the prizes and medals were won by Bharat (India),” she said.
Notably, the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation’s STEM Lab was launched in partnership with the Government of NCT of Delhi, with support from Human Mobile Devices (HMD) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The launch event was also attended by senior representatives from Da One Group.
Shikhar Dhawan said he was proud that the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation had launched its STEM Lab initiative in partnership with HMD to promote quality digital education for children in Delhi. He thanked the partners for supporting the initiative and emphasised the importance of STEM education, while expressing hope that Delhi would emerge as both an education and sports hub.
“I am very happy that the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation has embarked on this path. And thanks to HMD, who partnered with SDF so that we can deliver quality education to the children of Delhi. Digital education is very important for SDF, and today STEM education is the next step in this journey. Da One Group is equally committed to both areas: sports and education. Delhi has to be made not just an education hub, but also the sports capital. And as a son of Delhi, I feel really proud,” he said.
“And finally, I want to say one thing to the children today: that this STEM lab is not just about providing computers or equipment, but it is for you, for your ideas, to fulfill your dreams. And my heartfelt request to all of you is to dream big and work hard. We also came from a small background; we dreamed from there, we worked very hard on it. So don’t just dream, but it also requires equal hard work. May everyone study well, play well, and together let’s make our country the “Golden Bird” once again,” he added. (ANI)
