New Jersey [US], June 26 (ANI): The FIFA World Cup 2026 witnessed decisive group-stage action as three more groups were concluded on Thursday (local time), with several teams securing their places in the Round of 32 amid high-intensity encounters.

Ecuador produced one of the historic results of the day, defeating European giants and four-time champions Germany 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stage. Ivory Coast also booked its spot in the Round of 32 with a convincing 2-0 win over Curacao, according to ESPN.

The Netherlands continued their strong run with a 3-1 victory over Tunisia to finish top of their group, while Japan and Sweden progressed to the knockout rounds after playing out a 1-1 draw.

In another Group D fixture, Turkiye edged past the hosts, the United States, 3-2 in a match that had no impact on qualification outcomes. Meanwhile, Australia secured second place in their group after a goalless draw with Paraguay, who remain in contention for a knockout berth depending on other results.

Ecuador 2-1 Germany

The 2-1 victory over Germany marked only the second time Ecuador have progressed beyond the FIFA World Cup group stage, having previously achieved the feat in 2006 before bowing out to England in the Round of 16. It was also just the second occasion Ecuador had won a World Cup match after coming from behind, the first being against Honduras in 2014, according to ESPN.

Germany took the lead through Leroy Sane in the second minute, with the goal timed at 1 minute and 49 seconds, making it the nation’s second-fastest goal in FIFA World Cup history after Ernest Lehner’s first-minute strike at the 1934 edition.

The defeat was Germany’s first-ever World Cup group-stage loss to a South American opponent. Before the match, Germany had remained unbeaten in 10 such encounters, registering seven wins and three draws.

The win also ended Ecuador’s 13-year wait for a victory over a UEFA nation, with their previous triumph against European opposition coming in 2013 when they defeated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 3-2 in an international friendly.

Meanwhile, Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer equalled Lothar Matthaus and Miroslav Klose for the most FIFA World Cup appearances by a German player, making his 22nd start in the tournament.

Curacao 0 – 2 Ivory Coast

Nicolas Pepe entered the record books by becoming only the second player from his country to score a brace in a FIFA World Cup match, emulating Arouna Dindane, who achieved the feat against Serbia and Montenegro during the 2006 edition, according to ESPN.

Youngster Yan Diomande also scripted history. At 19 years and 223 days, he became the first African teenager since 1994 to register an assist in a FIFA World Cup match. The teenager has now created 10 chances at the ongoing tournament, the joint-highest tally alongside England midfielder Declan Rice and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.

Pepe’s two-goal display also made him the second-oldest African player to score a brace at a FIFA World Cup. At 31 years and 27 days, he trails only Cameroon legend Roger Milla in the record books.

Japan vs Sweden (goalless draw)

Japan forward Daizen Maeda became only the third Japanese player to score in multiple editions of the FIFA World Cup, joining Keisuke Honda and Shinji Okazaki on the elite list, according to ESPN.

Japan’s Yuto Nagatomo became the first Asian player to feature in five editions. The 39-year-old has previously featured in the 2010 South Africa, 2014 Brazil, 2018 Russia, 2022 Qatar, and 2026 Canada-Mexico-United States tournaments.

The result also saw Japan qualify for the knockout stage for the third consecutive FIFA World Cup, continuing their consistent run in the tournament. However, Japan are yet to win a knockout match at the World Cup and will have the chance to achieve that milestone when they face Brazil in the Round of 32, according to ESPN.

Sweden advanced to the knockout rounds for the fifth successive World Cup appearance. Their four outside-the-box goals in the group stage made them the first team in 20 years to achieve the feat, matching Brazil’s tally from the group stage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Tunisia 1-3 Netherlands

Netherlands striker Brian Brobbey has become only the third player in FIFA World Cup history to score with each of his first three shots at the tournament, joining Hungary’s Laszlo Kiss (1982) and Colombia’s Yerry Mina (2018), according to ESPN.

The Dutch side also extended their remarkable consistency in the competition, having progressed from the group stage in all 10 of their World Cup appearances, the best 100 per cent record of any team in the tournament’s history.

Netherlands scored 10 goals in the group stage of the ongoing edition, equalling their highest-ever tally at this phase, which they also achieved in 2014.

At the other end, Turkey endured a difficult campaign, conceding 12 goals in the tournament–the most by any team in a World Cup group stage since North Korea also shipped 12 in 2010.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands extended their unbeaten run in World Cup group-stage matches to 19 games. Their last defeat in the group stage came against Belgium in 1994.

Turkiye 3-2 USA

Auston Trusty’s strike marked the 173rd goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, setting a new record for the most goals scored in a single edition of the tournament, according to ESPN.

For Turkiye, Arda Guler etched his name into the record books as well, becoming their youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer at 21 years and 120 days.

Meanwhile, Kaan Ayhan’s stoppage-time winner in the eighth minute of added time became the latest match-winning goal conceded by the United States in World Cup history.

Paraguay 0-0 Australia

Paraguay managed just one shot in the first half against Australia, their lowest total in a single half of a FIFA World Cup match since 1966, according to ESPN.

That one Paraguay shot is also the fewest shots that Australia have faced in the first half of a World Cup match.

Australia have advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the third time in their history.

Australia remained unbeaten against Paraguay, with two wins and four draws in six games against them. Paraguay are the only South American team that Australia have faced and never lost to. (ANI)
